The story is told by the young Tryphena Sabine who rejects the marrage proposals of the menacing villain Reginald Jarrald, but later unexpectedly inherits his spooky mansion Tanglewood, where grim and gory hauntings take place.

Arthur Erskine Ellis (1902-83) was a distinguished biologist and natural history teacher for over forty years. While employed as a biology master at Lancing College in the 1920s, he had an early encounter with his literary hero M.R. James, and often entertained his college students by relating several macabre ghost stories of his own.
